Amy and Sofia 2008

When the California Supreme Court ruled in June 2008 that same-sex couples had the right to legally marry, Amy and Sofia flew back from where they'd been living in Sweden to take part in the over 18,000 historic unions that were celebrated that summer.

Neither of them had much attachment to the traditional wedding ideas, so we were able to help them create a unique ceremony to express their own desires. Short, simple and friendly were their guidelines. When they got to their vows, they held up cue cards to help each other with their adopted languages. Having a Burner Officiant was appealing to them, and they finally chose Baker Beach, the "birth place" of Burning Man, as their location. The day was sunny and gorgeous with stunning views of the Golden Gate, and even the Blue Angels were out (it was Fleet Weed) to celebrate with them.

(Yes, that little dot directly above their heads is actually a Blue Angel!)

Amy and Sofia Wedding Ceremony

WELCOME! We are gathered here today to witness and celebrate the union of Amy and Sofia
Let yourself be here completely in this moment. Let go of the cares of everyday life and BE HERE NOW.
- Feel the warmth of the sun’s fire on your face.
- Listen to the music of the water’s ceaseless motion.
- Feel the sand of the earth under your feet.
- Feel the wind blowing through your hair.
- Feel the love of these two people.
 
Now, as in the partnership of marriage, THERE ARE NO SPECTATORS. In this gathering YOU are all here participating in launching their life together.

Witness these two brave souls, standing up together to give themselves and their love’s commitment to each other, and the world.

Amy and Sofia are two people with the audacity to shamelessly follow their passion in their work and causes… and that’s what brought them together, bringing Amy to Stockholm at a time when it was Sofia’s job to take care of the crew from the U.S…. They saw each other’s light, and braved the odds and the immigration interviews to be together.

Amy and Sofia have recognized that they are each other’s “Ultimate”... as the gypsy’s say:

If we are here not to do
what you and I wanna do
and go forever crazy with it,
why the hell are we here?

Getting married is no small thing — it’s like a big dragon and you two have to stand before it now and speak the words aloud that your heart is already singing.

Now is the time for you to say those words — your vows — your promise to each other in the life that you are creating together from here on out:


 
- I promise to always listen to and respect your thoughts and opinions, and to try not to be so stubborn with my own (Jag lovar att alltid lyssna på dig, respektera dina tankar och åsikter, och försöka att inte vara så envis med mina egna)
- I promise to laugh more with you, play more with you, and to not take everything in life so seriously. (Jag lovar att skratta och ha roligt med dig,  Jag lovar också att tillåta dig att fundera och analysera, jag lovar att försöka hitta sätt att göra det med dig.)
- I promise to always respect and support your independence (Jag lovar att alltid respektera och stödja din frihet.)
- I promise to take care of myself, keeping in mind that if I am unhappy, you will be too. (Jag lovar att ta hand om mig själv och minnas att om jag är olycklig, blir du också det.)
- I promise to always communicate with you, so we develop and grow in the same direction (Jag lovar att alltid kommunicera med dig, så vi kan växa och utvecklas åt samma håll.)
- I promise to love you…  (Jag lovar att älska dig…  )
